Section 1
Section 2
The CD i am analysing is ‘Prism’ by ‘Katy Perry’. The genre of this CD is a hybrid of pop and Dance & house to keep things fresh not formulaic, also to not be associated with the mainstream artists. This is noticeable by the bold typefaces and the unsaturated colours of the CD keep the design separate from the dance genre.
The design of the CD is very spacious and orderly. All of the features are parallel and a lot of white space is used around the rim of the CD cover, which i think gives a clean, slick edge to the design.
The typography of ‘KATY PERRY’ fits in with the album name as the typeface is based around triangles, signifying prisms. The typeface of ‘PRISM’ is a lot bolder and more abstract and edgy as each letter is made up of three lines and it is not a popular or well known kind of typeface.
Considering the hierarchy, I believe that the image of Katy is the most prominent. I think this could be down to it having a border, also it is the largest feature on the cover. Then I think that the viewer’s eye travels towards the the flower illustration. I believe this is due to the saturated colours and detail surrounded by white space. Then the consumer will look at the text on the cover, to find out the main information of the CD. Then the to increase their knowledge of the album they would look at the back of the album.
The designer has obviously used a utilised grid when designing this CD album, it is obvious because everything is parallel and each feature is in line.
The photography is of the artist ‘Katy Perry’ in a sunny field. She is naked which shows a feel for nature in this album. The colours are all very natural and subtle, these colours and the light leak in the photograph gives a calming effect. She is in a very natural pose with her head leaning on her hand, also her makeup and hair isn’t outrageous or crazy, it’s very natural. She may have used this image to move on from previous album’s which were very bold and bright, and full of fantasy.
The colour scheme is very simple as it only contains very subtle, pale colours, but are still saturated enough to be pleasing to the consumer’s eye.
The only graphic ornamentation used within this album is the sticker / tattoo collection given with the CD. It makes the album fun and catches the eye of the younger generations as the album itself is quite mature.
I couldn’t find a clear image of the back of this album, so any institutional information isn’t clear.
To conclude this analysis, I believe that ‘Prism’ has a very sleek and fresh look to it. This is due to its construction, including; parallel features and use of white space, also the natural, subtle colour scheme. The audience it will appeal to is teenagers +. It has a mature look to it so the younger generation won’t be completely attracted to it, but the sticker and tattoo collection would appeal to this age range.
