Experiment 3

First I drew some images of paisley patterns.
I then scanned them, and placed them into photoshop. I made the images threshold so that they were black and white (two colours). This screenshot shows me copying part of the pattern which I then used in the next stage.

This is the final placement of my design. I cropped out the drawn designs I wanted to include and placed them into my design to fit together.

As I had edited the designs to be threshold, it made it easier to change the background into pink and the patterns into white.

I then experimented with the colours and decided to include a gradient from white to blue in the pattern.

Experiment 2

This is the original photograph I took for my graphics project, applying the makeup I wanted to fit the theme and to help me later on in the project.

I edited the photograph on photoshop. I kept the colour of her eyes and lips the same, and made the rest of the photo black and white, with no background.

To fit it into the CD cover design, I added a rose which I had already drawn and edited to create a full repeated pattern for the background.

I deleted the waste part of the background by making the the image transparent so that I could see the guideline and know where and what waste needed to be erased.

I then made the opacity 100% and adjusted the placement of the image to complete the experiment.

Experiment 1

I simply drew and coloured a female with a style and image I wanted to give my artist.

I then edited this in photoshop to bring an element of the 'funfair' theme. To do this i made my artist into a cartoon figure and added balloons and cotton candy which are structured with slightly opaque circles.
I then added the image to a CD template and edited it to fit the size, shape and colour scheme of the cover.

Analysed Contact sheet 3

I wanted to include a photo of the artist (Ava Raquel) so I used a friend to model for me. I did her makeup how I wanted it to look and the photographs turned out exactly how I wanted them. Some I eliminated as they weren't to the standard I wanted. After I had experimented with all the photographs, I  had picked one I thought was perfect for the CD cover and the theme. The other photographs at the bottom of the contact sheet were for me to experiment with, especially with the vibrant colours. But the edited versions didn't turn out how I imagined.

Analysed Contact Sheet 2

I had taken these photographs to edit and experiment with and see what I could create. I eliminate the ones I didn't believe were the best of quality to experiment with. I didn't like the designs I had created so I didn't take them further or include them within my final piece.

Analysed Contact Sheet 1

I have crossed out the images I definately don't want to use. I later experimented with the remaining photographs, but only decided to use one of them, which I edited and used within my final piece.

Print Analysis - Section 1 and 2

Section 1

Section 2

The CD i am analysing is ‘Prism’ by ‘Katy Perry’. The genre of this CD is a hybrid of pop and Dance & house to keep things fresh not formulaic, also to not be associated with the mainstream artists. This is noticeable by the bold typefaces and the unsaturated colours of the CD keep the design separate from the dance genre.

The design of the CD is very spacious and orderly. All of the features are parallel and a lot of white space is used around the rim of the CD cover, which i think gives a clean, slick edge to the design.

The typography of ‘KATY PERRY’ fits in with the album name as the typeface is based around triangles, signifying prisms. The typeface of ‘PRISM’ is a lot bolder and more abstract and edgy as each letter is made up of three lines and it is not a popular or well known kind of typeface.

Considering the hierarchy, I believe that the image of Katy is the most prominent. I think this could be down to it having a border, also it is the largest feature on the cover. Then I think that the viewer’s eye travels towards the the  flower illustration. I believe this is due to the saturated colours and detail surrounded by white space. Then the consumer will look at the text on the cover, to find out the main information of the CD. Then the  to increase their knowledge of the album they would look at the back of the album.

The designer has obviously used a utilised grid when designing this CD album, it is obvious because everything is parallel and each feature is in line.
The photography is of the artist ‘Katy Perry’ in a sunny field. She is naked which shows a feel for nature in this album. The colours are all very natural and subtle, these colours and the light leak in the photograph gives a calming effect. She is in a very natural pose with her head leaning on her hand, also her makeup and hair isn’t outrageous or crazy, it’s very natural. She may have used this image to move on from previous album’s which were very bold and bright, and full of fantasy.
The colour scheme is very simple as it only contains very subtle, pale colours, but are still saturated enough to be pleasing to the consumer’s eye.
The only graphic ornamentation used within this album is the sticker / tattoo collection given with the CD. It makes the album fun and catches the eye of the younger generations as the album itself is quite mature.
I couldn’t find a clear image of the back of this album, so any institutional information isn’t clear.

To conclude this analysis, I believe that ‘Prism’ has a very sleek and fresh look to it. This is due to its construction, including; parallel features and use of white space, also the natural, subtle colour scheme. The audience it will appeal to is teenagers +. It has a mature look to it so the younger generation won’t be completely attracted to it, but the sticker and tattoo collection would appeal to this age range.

Proposal for my album cover design

I am designing an album by a made up artist called ‘Ava Raquel’, with a similar genre of music to Katy Perry, Pop with a rocky edge. I quite like the pop art album cover ‘Life in a cartoon motion’ by ‘Mika’, also ‘Katy Perry’s’ album ‘The complete confection - teenage dream’ with a sleek fresh look to it.

I think i'm going to call the album ‘Mythical Aspect’. It implies the fun and amusement that people feel at festival and funfairs is a fantasy aspect of life, away from reality. People love the thrilling vibe of festivals and I want this album cover to bring that vibe to reality of the audience.

The theme consists of festivals, and the classic funfair, full of loud colours and abstract design. I want the album to have a ‘hair down’ vibe, with bright coloured illustrations of flowers and funfair rides, plus feathers to bring in the festival feel. Also I feel monochromatic illustrations of the funfair rides would give it a sharper look.

The colour scheme will be a mixture of vibrant saturated colours, quite girly associating it with candy the funfair and festivals; pinks, purples, greens and blues, also monochrome fitting in. I think this will make it unique and bold.

I may steer away from this idea as I haven’t experimented with it enough yet to make any final decisions.

I want it to look quite abstract with shapes but I still want it to look modern and fresh, I especially like feathers as it links in with festivals but I would like to link in tasty/unhealthy foods such as; candy, and typical funfair rides in with it to bring a fun party vibe.

I want the artwork to be hand drawn but maybe edit in some of the colours and finishing touches. I think I may use some watercolour paint or gouache, i'm not certain yet, but I would definitely like to use ink for the monochromatic designs. I want to also add some of my own photography in, or maybe draw the photographs. I will put the important details of the album on the front and back of album cover, but some inside the album book.

I want the album to look fun and fresh, with a pop/rock genre of music, and the album appealing to a young/young adult audience, taking them to a party atmosphere.

Genre Conventions

Genre and Design for Music

Genre
Typical conventions

Pop
Range of colours are used with this genre; vibrant, pale, saturated etc… Pop art can be compact on the design making them busy and give a joyful vibe. Designs can be random/odd and they consist of various kinds of typography. Photographs of the artist/s are sometimes used which can help get their face known worldwide.
*
Rock
Dark colours (purple/turquoise) are used within the design. The rock genre has the widest range of cover designs, as not all are dark, some are more vibrant. A lot of the Rock genre CD Covers try to give either a scary, depressing, or fantasy vibe.
*
Dance
Vibrant colours are used of Dance CD Covers. The ‘exploding’ background suggests a club atmosphere implying bright lasers/lights. The CD’s are designed to be ‘bling’. A lot using diamonds and ‘tacky’ features. Upper case and lower are combined to make it look unique from other genres, also the typography is usually 3d and bulky. There isn’t usually an artist’s image on the front as the are a compilation of artists. This genre’s albums are usually computer generated, making it look ‘technological’.
*
Rap
Rap CD covers usually use parafernalia; bling/broken things (associated with the street) A lot of them have self images, usually exposed, showing off their toned body. They use subdued colours to give it a manly stereotypical edge.

Pop punk
Pop punk covers usually use saturated colours and are busy sometimes with cartoon style images.
The typography is also a cartoon style to fit with the theme. Sometimes bizarre designs and hand drawn imagery or even photography. These three CD covers are great examples of this genre as they show the cartoon theme, hand drawn illustrations, and also the photographic and bizarre side of design.
*
Jazz
The design of this is abstract and consists of bright colours. There is usually only a few colours used and they use independent/original designs and typography. This genre usually has quite bizarre illustrations and creativity within the design.
